Prior to delving into the instructional itself, let me clarify that it took me years to get the desired appearance for my brows, and there were many uncomfortable moments along the road. Like any other Millennial lady, I had trouble controlling my naturally bushy and curly brows, so I overplucked them in the early 2000s and feel ashamed of the pictures.
I spent years coming to Benefit Brow Bar for eyebrow shaping after the “thin brow” phase was finished, essentially having experts retrain my brows to take on their current form. And when I say years, I mean YEARS, but I believe that’s when I had to start using eyebrow makeup every day to help with the “growing out” phase, which is what made me feel so at ease doing my own eyebrows today.
Detailed Step-by-Step Eyebrow Guide
What’s required:
Eyebrow Pencil: I’ve tried practically every one on the market and always come back to the NYX Cosmetics Micro Brow Pencil. It’s my absolute favorite. It’s under $10, has two ends (a colored pencil and a spoolie), has a creamy, long-wearing consistency, a very thin tip that makes it possible to draw really delicate lines, and is cruelty-free and vegan! (I use the shade “chocolate” as a guide.)
Brow Gel: I personally like to keep my brows natural with light hair, therefore I prefer clear brow gel. I usually think that colored brow gel makes my brows look too heavy. Patrick Ta Major Brow Lamination Gel is my current fave, and I don’t see me switching it out very soon. I adore how it gives the appearance of laminated eyebrows and remains in place.
Concealer: Right now, I’m very into this Ilia concealer for touch-ups.
Highlighter: The ultimate embellishment!
First Step
Lift and spread your eyebrows with a spoolie brow brush that has been cleaned.
Step Two
Using your favorite eyebrow pencil—I always use the NYX Cosmetics Micro Brow Pencil, as I indicated above—lightly draw the top of your brow beginning at the front and ending at the tip, about 1 centimeter in. The secret is to apply very little pressure to your skin in order to draw a very thin line.
Step Three
Draw a very thin line from the front of your brow to the tip, tracing the area beneath.
Step Four
If your brows appear sparse in any other area, carefully draw upward lines that resemble hair elsewhere. To prevent any sharp or strong lines, it’s important to apply the lightest touch possible. Using a clean spoolie, go across your brow every few of strokes to “break up” the color and assist achieve a more natural appearance.
Step Number Five
Once you are satisfied with the way both brows appear, use the Patrick Ta Major Brow Lamination Gel to brush your brows from root to tip. Then, push your brows into place using the applicator’s back to “laminate” them into the shape you want.
Step Six
Use a concealer brush and a little amount of concealer to tidy up the area surrounding your brows. Then, add a tiny touch of highlighter beneath your arch to complete!
A FEW ADVICES TO RETENTION:
I advise seeing a specialist to determine the ideal eyebrow form for your unique face shape before beginning any eyebrow adventure. Although they might be too much for you, my heavier, arched brows complement my larger face and resemble my natural brow shape, so they work for me.
When drawing in your brows, a good rule of thumb is to start them at the inner corner of your eyes and feather them approximately 1/8 inch towards the center. The brow should then stop at the outside corner of your eye and the outer side of your nose, respectively, where the ends of an eyebrow pencil should be placed.
Regarding eyebrow color, I believe it truly comes down to personal choice. When one has lighter hair, one’s brows tend to be one or two shades darker than one’s hair, but when one has darker hair, they usually match the color of the hair perfectly.
